In-Studio Workshop:  Mindfulness Meditation For Cancer Patients, Caregivers & Survivors
with Susan Weinschenk, PhD
Saturday, May 15th | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
at 5 Koshas Yoga & Wellness in Mountain Studio

What is Mindfulness Meditation? Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation in which you use your breath to bring your attention to the present moment. It sounds simple, but the results of Mindfulness meditation can be profound.

Research at several medical institutions, including the University of Massachusetts and the University of Wisconsin, show that Mindfulness meditation can have a long-term effect on brain functioning that results in a reduction in anxiety and stress.

Where does Mindfulness Meditation originate?  Mindfulness meditation has ancient roots in Zen Buddhism, and became popular when Jon Kabat-Zinn started a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the University of Massachusetts in 1979. Since then it has gained in popularity.

Here's what you will learn:
  • What mindfulness meditation is
  • How to meditate
  • How Mindfulness meditation is similar to, and different from, other forms of meditation and yoga
  • The research on the effects of Mindfulness meditation on the brain and body
  • The easiest and best ways to incorporate Mindfulness meditation into your own health and awareness routines

This is an experiential workshop. We will spend time in meditation during the workshop.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. You can bring a yoga mat, but it is not required.
  • If you’ve never meditated before you are welcome to join the class. It works fine for beginners.
  • If you are experienced with any type of meditation you are welcome to join the class. Just know that we will be learning and practice Mindfulness meditation only.
  • Mindfulness meditation is not a spiritual or religious practice. It uses only breathing and awareness.

Who should attend? This workshop is geared specifically for people who are going through or have been through cancer treatment, and their caregivers. Susan is a breast cancer survivor and used mindfulness meditation to deal with pain and anxiety during her treatment.
