Many of us (including myself) get to a point in our lives where our bodies just don’t work as well as they used to. We hear terms like “range of motion,” “rotator cuff injury,” “bone spurs,” “inflammation,” to name a few. If someone suggests a yoga class, we quickly respond that we’ll go to one after we recover some of our flexibility, somewhat the same as saying that we will go to the doctor when we feel better.

There is a way around all those picture-perfect postures (poses). I call it “sneaking in under the fence.” Others call it adaptation or variation

Each yoga posture has a primary intention and a secondary or even tertiary intention. The intention is what the posture is suppose to help us with. Postures can be done in different ways to accomplish the intention (s) without creating any pain in the process. In short, we shouldn’t be doing a yoga posture if it hurts. There is usually another way, a better way.

That’s where sneaking in under the fence comes in. As long as we are accomplishing the intention (s) of the posture in a pain-free manner, who cares what we look like!

This 4-Week Series Offers "Sneaking In Under The Fence" Weekly Classes Include:
  • Week #1 - August 13th: Address shoulder discomfort (How can I position my arm so my shoulder doesn’t hurt?).
  • Week #2 - August 20th: Take a chance and experience the statement, “Healthy movement is evenly distributed movement,” as it applies to back discomfort.
  • Week #3 - August 27th: Bring yourself to your knees and learn some adaptations to get you off your knees and into a more comfortable position.
  • Week #4 - September 3rd: Develop your all around balance.
The next time you go in for a medical exam and are asked if there are tripping hazards in your home, you can stand up and challenge your doctor or nurse to a one-leg balance posture.

There’s something else that you will pick up during this series, how breath combined with certain postures can create more relaxation and less worry. It’s one of those things that I’ll sneak in under the fence when we go through the yoga practices.
