Many of us (including myself) get to a point in our lives where our bodies just don’t work as well as they used to. We hear terms like “range of motion,” “rotator cuff injury,” “bone spurs,” “inflammation,” to name a few. If a yoga class is suggested, we think of a lycra-clad group of people rolling their colorful mats out on the floor and promptly going into a posture (pose) that is as painful for us as it looks. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Each yoga posture has a primary intention and a secondary or even a tertiary intention. The intention is what the yoga posture is suppose to help us with. No two people will be able to conform to the posture position the same way. Postures should be adapted to fit the needs of the individual practitioner with no pain. The key is how we adapt. There is usually another way, a better way, to meet the intention (s) of the posture with no harm and with increased benefit.
This specialty designed series will include adaptations for shoulders, knees, back and balance. Throughout all of the classes, you will learn and experience the benefits of movement in concert with your breath, discovering along the way how controlling your breath can affect your body, your mind and your spirit. Yoga really is not about how well we can stretch our hamstrings, although we may find that our hamstrings benefit.
Yoga is really about bringing some control and some peace to our otherwise wildly scattered minds in a fast-paced, polarized world. It is to that end that this series is directed.
